Welcome to the Plus One Teaching project - stories of innovative educators, for educators!
Plus One is a project to showcase innovative educators and provide inspiration and ideas to other educators.
Plus One is a concept in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) that simply says - just make one positive change at a time to improve your teaching.
Born out of my own experiences over the past few years as I have been fortunate to be exposed to many amazing teachers, coaches and educators of all types, this project will incorporate a podcast and a book where I will share stories of amazing teachers, with an emphasis on transferable skills, ideas and applications which we can all try and implement into our own teaching practice.
"A goal is simply a dream taken seriously" - Dr. Alan Barnard
My goal here is to explore, learn and hopefully provide some inspiration to other educators. Enjoy!
This project is supported by a Fellowship from the University College Dublin Innovation Academy, funded through the HCI / Convene programme 2021.
Discussions with amazing educators from Ireland and further afield, in all different types of education - University, college, schools, prisons - it's amazing what we can all learn from each other when we start to share our stories, ideas and tips!
Their approaches and projects will be showcased so we can all benefit from their insights, and we'll try to bring out some actionable tips which other educators can take and apply in their own teaching practice.
Plus One Teaching Book
Over the summer of 2021, I am collating the best bits from my first 16 discussions (season 1 of the podcast) into volume 1 of a book series on innovative teaching and learning, aimed at educators who want inspiration and ideas to incorporate into their own practice.
Later interviews 17-32 will be season 2 of the podcast, and I plan to write them up into volume 2 of the series.
If you would like to be notified when the first book is available as well as the followups, register by clicking on the link below and I'll let you know when they are released!
To paraphrase Tammy Darcy - founder of the Shona Project - I want to write the book(s) I wished I'd had when I started teaching. I want my books to inspire and point readers towards teaching as a catalytic, inspirational mode of co-created engagement in a subject, rather than as the outmoded sage-on-stage paradigm we need to leave behind to equip today's learners with the skills and abilities to function in the 21st century.
Conference Poster Presentation Acceptance - my poster was accepted to the Climbing the UDL Ladder : Building a Culture of Inclusion in Higher Education Conference being held in Sligo on 26th May 2021.
